Inspiration:

“The women in the communities must infuse the nation with the spirit of Masakhane.” Nelson Mandela (1995)
To me, the original painting (which was made to be looked up at) is indicative of the power and authority a figure like Napoleon had. His commanding posture, his confidence– he oozes self-assurance. He even famously proclaimed himself emperor, which is mentioned in the title of this painting.

And in essence, that is what I wanted to convey too– strong African women will always be a vital part of our collective memory and cultural identity as South Africans. In light of the GBV crisis in South Africa, no one would be more deserving of emperorship, of empowerment. This Empress represents all our women, and I felt like carving out a little space in history was necessary to show my appreciation.
