Artist Bio: |
My name is Mia Coetzer. I am 11 years old and attend Jordania Primary School in Bethlehem. I am very energetic and love to play outside. I enjoy hiking in the mountains and competing in mountain biking, which I find a lot of fun. When I’m not outside, I enjoy my other passion, which is painting. I love playing with colors, exploring new techniques, and watching my ideas come to life as I paint them. |

I love the sea and playing in the waves. I wanted to paint something I enjoy, so that when I look at it, it brings back good memories. I started by sketching with pencil on canvas and then painted with acrylic. I created the waves in different color layers, decorating them with an earbud to represent South Africa’s love for beads. I used a correction pen to add the white spots on each bead. Initially, I planned to include surfboards instead of boats, but I decided to keep the original boats from The Great Wave off Kanagawa. I added mist in the background with white oil paint.
To create the white foam on the waves, I used a palette knife and ripple paint. Then I applied pink watercolor over it, rubbing off the excess to bring out the white again. I chose to feature our national flower, the Protea, to show that the waves give everything back, and in this instance, they return Proteas. |
