Inspiration: The artist was inspired by a moment taken in Umzamowethu, where the children were playing with a carefree innocence. This, enclosed with community, portrays the everyday life of children in townships. Children can be found playing in the streets rather than in front of a tv screen. Although these moments seem idyllic, the title of the work also refers to so many of these young people who keep on running in circles. It reflects how fatherlessness, educational restrictions, crime and poverty mindset are running these children tired (tyred). Many of them find themselves “running” alone. This painting is a prayer for the children, who need to grow up too quickly, to keep their innocence and creativity and to run the “race” to the end. We see you and we love you.
Artist Bio: As a youth worker and missionary, I am dedicated to empowering and supporting young people in their life’s journey. My love for animals, art and the outdoors fuel my desire to create safe and engaging spaces for the youth to explore, learn and thrive. My faith in Jesus guides my approach to life as it emphasises compassion, kindness and empathy. I have been committed since 2016 to walk alongside young people as they navigate life’s challenges and triumphs. I am called to serve and love others, sharing God’s love and hope with those around me. I use art to tell the stories of those I work with and to showcase a glimpse of His love for them.
